Afterburner Fitness

Conclusions

It can be seen that the last three repetitions of the Afterburner® set had the same activations as the last repetition of the 10RM set. This indicates that this subject would require three 10RM sets to achieve the overloaded activations of the last three repetitions of a single Afterburner® set.

As stated in the introduction, it requires speculation to comment on the success that exercises with Afterburner® would have in terms of developing muscular size and strength because the present study did not train the subjects for a long enough period of time to elicit such changes. However, it is known that muscle requires overload for such changes to occur and that this overload is usually achieved in the last few repetitions of sets that contain six to twelve repetitions of loads that are less than 1RM. The results of this study clearly showed that with appropriate settings of the Afterburner®, overload is achieved on more of the repetitions than can be achieved during a traditional 10RM set. Furthermore, greater levels of overload were seen in the last repetitions as subjects achieved greater levels of fatigue with the Afterburner®.
